Shacknews Best Nintendo Switch Game of 2021 – Metroid Dread

It’s always a big day when fans of a longtime franchise get another entry into the series, and that’s precisely what Nintendo has done with Metroid Dread. Not only were fans of the originals blown away by the story and gameplay, but newcomers to the series found themselves drawn into an unforgettable experience. At Shacknews, we couldn’t get enough of Metroid Dread, which is why it won the Shacknews Award for Best Nintendo Switch Game of 2021.

Nintendo announced Metroid Prime 4 a few years ago now, and after a few delays and a refresh, gamers had sort of lost hope of seeing another Metroid title anytime soon. But then, outside of left field, Nintendo revealed Metroid Dread and longtime fans went wild. It had been four years since Metroid: Samus Returns, and gamers were ready to dip their toes into the iconic side-scrolling series that gave birth to the now famous genre Metroidvania.

There’s a good reason the genre goes by the Metroid name, and Dread once again proves why this genre is a titan in the industry. Every element of the game is a classic example of how these games should be created. Players will slowly progress through the different areas, unlocking abilities that allow them to dig deeper into places previously inaccessible. The levels and areas are masterfully designed, with the player never feeling lost but always feeling a sense of discovery.

Metroid Dread also gives longtime fans a sense of reward for waiting years for another entry into the series. From boss fights to important lore revealings, the game manages to cross the line between honoring the past and introducing newcomers to the dangerous universe. Fan favorite enemies return as major reveals unfold that finally provide answers to the questions that have been burning in our souls since we first heard of Samus.

Our very own Blake Morse sang praise from the rooftops in his Metroid Dread review. Whether it’s the beautiful and varied locations, the diverse and powerful abilities and weaponry, or the sense of exploration and a rich history, there is so much to adore about Metroid Dread. All of this solidified Metroid Dread in our minds as the deserved winner of the Shacknews Award for Best Nintendo Switch Game of 2021.
