What’s the next big Nintendo Switch improvement you want to see?

Bluetooth audio tracking

So the Switch has been out for four years now. Four years! And during that time, we’ve received a myriad of “stability” updates that don’t do anything for us. But recently there was a glimmer of promise. Bluetooth audio device firmware! It was a ray of hope that one day we might receive some of our most wanted Switch requests. So what’s the next big Switch improvement you’d like to see?

For me, the answer is obvious: the files. I think if I could pick just one thing to wave my magic wand and tune in, it would be records. Pretty much every gaming UI has them now, and given that they were great from the last generation, it’s time for Nintendo to jump into the program. In fact, I would extend this concept of “a big improvement to the Switch” further and extend that wish to the entire UI.

Listen, I find the Switch UI to be straightforward. I wouldn’t change that for the most part, as I know people like it over the PC OS-like presentation of its competition. This is especially useful, in portable mode, to access things at a glance. But it would be nice to get more real functionality with this UI.

What about extended social features? We all miss the Miiverse and it won’t be returning, but something even at a similar distance would be fantastic. Now that they finally have a smartphone app, there is so much potential to add more social aspects to it, albeit in a safe and Nintendo-worthy way. I can go on and on. Thus I’ll go.

What about the actual optional themes? Nintendo sort of ditched even the concept of color change. Or some custom UI icon manipulation? No, I don’t think I really need the Switch Online button you introduced, thanks. Or what about better search options for the eShop menu? Or a better playtime tracker (remember those from previous systems)?

All of this is optional content that will enhance many user experiences, without interfering with people who like things the way they are. I don’t think we’ll have them all by the time the Switch is grazed afterwards. But we could have several! How about ringing the bell and giving Nintendo some ideas.
